Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (reviewed Tuesday 15 October).

Everyone has a unique story, and every story is a gift. The Story Room is a monthly event that brings people together with the intention of Sharing Stories, Changing Lives.

MC Karen Sander wears numerous hats – creating several platforms for members of the community to hold space, engage and inspire. As a Story Campaigner she curates the monthly line up at Bucketty’s in Brookvale – a classy pub atmosphere that feels unpretentious and laid-back, open to everyone that is interested in a good yarn. Karen searches for stories that are personal and true, with a monthly prompt to tie the theme together.

This month’s theme was Hidden Superpowers which elicited a fantastic line up of speakers from all walks of life and experiences. The six speakers included:

Craig Foster – former Socceroo, broadcaster, adjunct professor, author, filmmaker, and human rights activist. As a father and human rights campaigner, Craig shared his superpower of relentless advocacy for refugees and asylum seekers, challenging and redefining our stereotypical perception of people smugglers.

Monique Storey – a local artist, whiskey enthusiast, host of The Optimistic Artist Podcast and major cheerleader of artists. Combing her love for technology and art, Monique now creates interactive artworks that sells around the world. In her story Monique shared her superpower of dealing with setbacks and failure, turning obstacles into opportunities for success.

Galuh Wandita – works in resolving gender, peace and conflict issues since the 1990s, working with Oxfam and civil society groups in Indonesia. Together with a group of East Timorese activists, she co-founded East Timor’s first organisation to work on violence against women, Fokupers in Dili in 1997. Not all heroes wear capes, but Galuh’s cape is a beautiful woven testimony of her fight for freedom and equality for women, often under extremely dangerous conditions.

Vanessa Venning – is a leading Executive Coach, facilitator, presenter, and author; her first book Pivotal Career Moments – How Confidence can impact career success & what to do about it, is a game changer, particularly for executive women. With an illustrious career in music and media, Vanessa shared her childhood superpower of being able to dream big.

Theodore Avery – is an actor, travel blogger, and creator of The Conscious Experience on YouTube, sharing practical concepts in philosophy, mindset, and mental health. Theodore shared his superpower of being able to change his mindset to change his reality, even when at times his dreams seemed impossible.

Greg Thorsby – is not only a playwright, actor, film composer and award-winning Television Ad maker, he was also the 5 night carry-over champion of Channel 9’s Catchphrase. With self-deprecating wit, Greg entertained the crowd with his superpower of making each day feel like he just stepped into a scene from an Indiana Jones movie.

With this incredible line up we are eager to hear more! It was an evening that certainly created connections and conversation. Details of the next Story Room event are below:
