Vaginal politics entered the chat at Factory Theatre this month with a brand spanking new comedy variety show presented by Queen Hades. Misogyny was called out in an evening filled with uproarious laughter, solidarity and acknowledgment of women and female identity.
There were many stand out gems and lol moments including an advert for MAWM (a perfume for Mediocre Average White Man, the sort that gets the most praise for doing very little), my gay son is gayer-than-your-son, women impersonating locker-room talk, frustrations of female patients talking to male doctors, and men expecting women to sound like them and talk like them to be heard and taken seriously.
It was also empowering to see skits that affirmed that no means NO – it’s not ‘open to interpretation’ like this clip would suggest. Jokes like these are no laughing matter, and especially not when men think their behaviour is justified.
Another personal favourite was a quiet and intriguing reflection by Martha Russell about the proliferation of lesbian roles in mainstream movies, told with tenderness and candid innocence. It’s an exciting era to finally have a variety of female role models and characters we can all relate to, regardless of their background, age and sexual identity.
Tough Titties played at Factory Theatre on Thursday 16 and Saturday 18 February. For more info about the production team follow them on Instagram or Facebook.
